Special Instructions The following information must be provided to the laboratory for the proper processing of the specimen: specific site or specimen, current antibiotic therapy, age, sex of patient. Collection time and date, physicians and pager number and clinical diagnosis.
Specimen Urethral swab ( mini tip), seminal / prostatic fluid
Volume One swab or seminal / prostatic fluid in sterile container
Container Uretheral swab, collection and transport culture system. For prostatic / seminal fluid use sterile tube.
Collection Insert the culture swab using sufficient pressure and rotating motion to ensure the swab comes in contact with all urethral surfaces. Allow the swab to remain inserted for 2-3 seconds and withdrawal. Patient should not have urinated at least 1 hour prior to sample collection.
Storage Instructions Transport specimen to the laboratory immediately.
Causes for Rejection Specimen not received in appropriate collection device. Excessive delay in transport. If an unacceptable specimen is received, the nursing station will be called and another specimen will be requested before disposal of the original specimen.
Reference Range No growth or commensal flora
