Turnaround Time Physician will be notified of all positive cultures within the next work day. Negative cultures are reported after 8 weeks.

Special Instructions Requisition must state AFB or mycobacteria. The following instructions must be provided to the laboratory for the proper processing of specimens: current antibiotic therapy, age and sex of patient, collection time and date, physician's name and pager number, and clinical diagnosis or underlying disease.

Volume Pediatrics: 2 mL; adults: 11 mL

Container Pediatrics: 1.5 IsolatorTM tube; adults: 10 IsolatorTM tube (two tubes each)

Causes for Rejection Broken tube. If an unacceptable specimen is received, the appropriate nursing station will be notified and another specimen requested.
