Special Instructions The following information must be provided to the laboratory for the proper processing of the specimen: specific site of specimen, current antibiotic therapy, age and sex of patient, collection time and date, physician's name and pager number, and clinical diagnosis.

Volume One swab or 0.5 mL aseptically aspirated material
Container Swab in Culturette®; Use Anaerobic transport collection system (BBLVacutainer Tube) (aerobic).
Storage Instructions Transport specimen to the laboratory immediately.
Patient Preparation Sterile preparation of the site.
Causes for Rejection Spillage or contamination of specimen, specimen not received in appropriate container, excessive delay in transport. If unacceptable specimen is received the nursing station will be called and another specimen will be requested before discarding.
