Volume 6 mL

Minimum Volume Two 3 mL aliquots frozen EDTA plasma

Container Two lavender top (EDTA) tubes

Collection Draw into chilled tubes and place on ice.

Storage Instructions Transport specimen on ice to the laboratory immediately. Centrifuge at 4°C and separate plasma and freeze immediately.

Patient Preparation NPO after midnight. Patient must avoid having radioisotope scan administered 24 hours prior to venipuncture. Patient should be seated and calm during collection.

Reference Range If serum osmolality <285 mOsm/L: le2.2 pg/mL; if serum osmolality >290 mOsm/kg: 2.2-8.5 pg/mL

Use Diagnose urine concentration disorders, especially diabetes insipidus, syndrome of inappropriate ADH (SIADH), psychogenic water intoxication, and syndromes of ectopic ADH production
