Use Monitoring of certain carcinomas. Not to be used for screening for cancer. AFP will be elevated in 90% of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, although it can be elevated in nonmalignant chronic liver diseases as well. Also elevated in gonadal and extragonadal general tumor types such as yoc sac tumor, embryonal carcinoma, teratocarcinoma, choriocarcinoma, just elevated in pare seminoma, dysgerminomas, and teratomas. A low incidence of elevation is seen in a variety of tumors, especially carcinoma of the stomach, pancreas, and biliary tracts.
