Container Factor VIII concentrate is a dried commercial preparation preassayed for factor VIII content providing more predictable post-transfusion levels of factor VIII than preparations of fresh frozen plasma and cryoprecipitate. Supplied in single dose 10 mL, 20 mL, and 30 mL vials (AHF activity is stated on the label of each vial) with sterile diluent, a double-ended needle for reconstitution, and a filter spike for withdrawal.

Storage Instructions The dried preparation is refrigerated. Once reconstituted the solution should be administered as soon as possible. The solution should be kept at room temperature.

Patient Preparation Prothrombin time (PT), partial thromboplastin time (PTT), and factor VIII assay should be performed to document hemophilia A or coagulation defect. Patient must have transfusion wristband for checking against component container label prior to administration.

Reference Range Half-life of factor VIII is 8-17 hours in the absence of inhibitors and active bleeding. Raising the factor VIII level to 30% of normal is usually required for surgery or treatment of major hemorrhage, and 15% of normal to stop spontaneous bleeding into the joints.

Use Factor VIII concentrate is used in the treatment of hemophilia A for the prevention and control of hemorrhagic episodes.
